Focus On - Exam Stress
GCSEs, A-Levels, SATs, University, Professional exams, driving test - nervous? Stressed? Anxious?
Exams are a stressful experience for most people. You know you have studied hard and know the subject inside out but exam day nerves cause all that hard work to disappear as your mind goes blank, your palms are so sweaty and shaky they are not in your control and you know that your nerves will reduce your ability to do well.
Life coaching with TFT can give you back the control to face exams without nerves. In just one session I can give you the skills to control your own anxiety and tips to help you achieve your potential in those vital exams.
Jennifer's story is a classic example of what life coaching and TFT can do for driving test nerves. I have never met anyone yet who was not nervous before their driving test and Jennifer was particularly anxious.
This is Jennifer's story in her own words:
It was the day before my driving test and I was so nervous it was ridiculous.
All I did was think about it and talk about it and dream about constantly, when I thought about it my test my hands would shake I would get knots in my stomach and pains in my chest and head.
I was explaining to Gillian what was making me so nervous and she told me that she could get rid of my nerves by completing a sequence called ‘thought field therapy’ my nerves on a scale of 1/10 was around 8/10 and she told me we could reduce it to 0/10 and get rid of my nerves completely.
We did a few different routines to try and bring my nerves down, I managed to get them down to 4/10 but it wouldn’t seem to go any lower. Gillian told me that it was my toxins and I needed to release them so we did an exercise which is called psychological reversal were you think about your nerves whilst releasing your toxins. By holding an object e.g. perfume and if you rock back it’s a toxin and if you rock forward it isn’t sound stupid but it really works!!
By now my nerves are 2/10 then Gillian visualized my driving test with me and talked me through my perfect test in my head whilst I closed my eyes and imagined it was actually happening. And then I released my toxins one more time and my nerves come down to 1/10.
Once I got home I could actually have my dinner and watch TV without thinking about parallel parks. I went out that evening and didn’t even think about it and went to bed without dreaming about for the first night since I booked my test!
I woke up the next morning ready for my test, I got to the test centre and I was laughing and joking with my driving instructor in the waiting room and wasn’t nervous or worried at all. I got in the car and did both my parallel park and three point turn perfect my test was going brilliantly I hadn’t had any problems or done anything wrong, until I joined a roundabout on the way back to the test centre and got cut up by a lorry. I couldn’t believe it when I told Gillian she said to me that in my therapy all I kept talking about was getting cut up on a roundabout, when I got nerves down to 1/10 getting cut up on a roundabout was the only thing I was still worried about as I knew it was the only thing that may of made me fail and it did!!! When I got back to the test centre I only had 3 minors out of 15 and my examiner told me I would of passed if that truck had never cut me up, so it was just and unlucky moment.
If I hadn’t of had the ‘thought field therapy’ I think that I would have been far too nervous to even drive out the test centre. I was calm and relaxed just unfortunate that I was at the wrong place at the wrong time. I definitely think it’s a good way to get rid of your nerves for anything such as driving tests and exams etc.
And next time I know I will fly through my test and not be negative about anything and get my nerves down to 0/10.
